~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills J.P. Losman returns from the garbage heap to lead the Bills to victory
Dolphins Is Cleo Lemon the future of this team?
Jets Pennington plays the whole game and has 106 yards passing, Clemens plays two series and has 67 yards
Patriots Just keep rolling along
AFC South
Colts Crush the Panthers en route to game this Sunday against the Pats
Jaguars QB throws for only 100 yards and team rushes for only 133 yards, but D picks off Garcia 3 times for victory
Texans Going the wrong way. Have absolutely no running game
Titans LenDale White (25-133) bails out listless Vince Young (6-14-42 yards)
AFC North
Bengals We wonder what the next Chad Johnson TD dance is going to look like. Chad Johnson... remember him?
Browns Beat Seattle this week in Cleveland, and you might have to start taking the Browns for real
Ravens Tough game at Pittsburg this Sunday
Steelers When this team plays good, they're tough to beat
AFC West
Broncos In the words of Herm Edwards, "play to win the game." Shanahan doesn't, and the Broncos lose on the second play of overtime
Chargers The Chargers rose out of the ashes of Southern California to destroy the Texans
Chiefs Will Preist Holmes be a factor?
Raiders Culpepper's miscues again hurt the Raiders
NFC East
Cowboys At woeful Eagles Sunday night
Eagles Westbrook, McNabb, and nothing more
Giants Looks like Jacobs is ready to be the every down back, well 2 out of 3 downs anyway (23-131 yards)
Redskins Ran into a buzzsaw Sunday. Must rebound against the Jets this weekend to stay afloat in tight NFC East
NFC South
Buccaneers Some poor play calling and Galloway letting a punt go over his head late in the game cost the Bucs
Falcons Will Petrino be gone by season's end?
Panthers Are we supposed to be surprised that Vinny T started throwing INTs?
Saints Finally playing like a good team, could be at .500 this weekend
NFC North
Bears So let's see Griese throws 4 INTs, should Bear fans be calling for Kyle Orton?
Lions At 5-2, the Lions could be for real
Packers Favre's pulling out miracles now, but will he do it in January?
Vikings No QB, no WRs, no defense; why not just feed the ball to Adrian Peterson?
NFC West
Cardinals At 3-4 after the bye week, will the Cardinals sink or swim?
49ers Good to see Vernon Davis finally have a good game (6-71 yards, 1 TD)
Rams 0-8, the bye week couldn't have come at a better time
Seahawks Alexander and Hasselbeck must play better if the Seahawks are to get on a roll

~ Extra Point ~

Four QBs threw for 130 yards or less on 8 completions or less and still won their games. They were: E. Manning (8-59), Young (6-42), Gray (7-100), Rivers (7-130).

Has anybody's worth fell more this season than Mangenius'?

The fact that Vinny Testeverde is playing QB today is a blemish on the NFL.

Al Michaels is starting to sound as ridiculous as Phil Simms on plays that are being challenged.

Tom Brady is on pace to throw 60 touchdown passes this season.

~ Fumble ~

RE: Monday Night Football

So far, ESPN's MNF's announcing team has been good. Mike Tirico is solid, not overblown. Kornheiser's a bit dopey and childish, but that's okay, and Jaws is like a breath of fresh air compared to that windbag Theisman.

Having said that, they are now starting that annoying habit of having a guest in the booth at sometime during the game. It's okay if it's a sports guy who could add his perspective to the game. But last week it was some nobody named Russell Crowe, and this past Monday, it somebody named Vince Vaughn. Are you kiddin' us? No football fan wants to hear from these inflated, talking heads during a game, especially a good game.

~ Interception ~

RE: Rutgers football

So now we guess that everyone could stop all this Rutgers #1 team in the nation stuff, huh? We knew wins over Buffalo and Norfolk State were impressive, but they just can't seem to beat the teams they need to beat. Guys, if you think you're a legitimate big-time team, get a Michigan, or an LSU, or an Alabama, or a USC, or a Washington on your schedule.

And while we're at it, the idea that South Florida was the #2 team in the nation 2 weeks ago was ridiculous.

Oh, and one last thing, Rutgers' nickname is the Scarlet Knights. What's with those absurd black uniforms?

~ 2 Minute Warning ~

Key Games:

Broncos at Lions
     - Broncos must stay with surging Chargers
     - We'll ask it again, are the Lions for real?

Panthers at Titans
     - Every game is big for the Panthers in their division
     - If the Colts lose to the Pats and the Titans win, they'll only be 1 game back

Bengals at Bills
     - Bengals are done at 2-6 if they lose
     - Bills shooting for .500 halfway through the season

Jags at Saints
     - Jags are in same spot as Titans
     - A Saint win puts them right in contention in NFC South
