~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills Do we see a QB controversy brewing?
Dolphins This team's poor season started either when they signed Trent Green or drafted Ted Ginn #1
Jets Dink and dunks won't get it done. Is the lack of production from Thomas Jones the line's fault or is he really not that good?
Patriots Making it look too easy
AFC South
Colts Powerful offense could be derailed if Harrison and Addai can't play
Jaguars Better get the passing game going in order to compete in the the tough AFC South
Texans Got to get more from their running game
Titans 2-1, bye week over - time for Vince Young to lead this team to the playoffs
AFC North
Bengals Chad Johnson's antics seem a little ridiculous when his team is losing games and probably will lose more than they'll win this season
Browns Looks like Romeo's job is safe for another week
Ravens How overrated is that Raven D?
Steelers So Ben had a bad year because of last year's offensive coordinator and current Cardinal coach Ken Whisenhunt's playcalling... huh. Well Whisenhunt just got the last laugh
AFC West
Broncos Cutler sure had some bad body language during the game Sunday against the Colts
Chargers How bad is it for the Chargers... the crowd was actually chanting "Marty, Marty, Marty"
Chiefs Larry Johnson finally gets going (123 yards rushing). That can only be a good thing
Raiders Culpepper rushing for 3 TDs. It reminds us of when he was good. Whenever that was
NFC East
Cowboys Clearly the best team in the NFC after a quarter of a season
Eagles How does Andy Reid still have a job?
Giants 12 sacks... 12! Keep it up and this team will make the playoffs
Redskins Let's hope the play calling gets better
NFC South
Buccaneers With Cadillac in the shop for the year, will the Bucs continue to roll in the bad NFC South
Falcons Harrington (23-29-223, 2 TDs, 0 INTs) good numbers but the question is: where is this team going with him at QB?
Panthers Penalties, sacks, turnovers, no running game, poor QB play. This team is bad
Saints If Sean Payton was coach of the year in 2006, are we to believe he has forgotten how to coach or is the Coach of the Year award a joke?
NFC North
Bears So are Chicago fans happy now with Brian Griese at QB?
Lions Should we take this team serious?
Packers Congrats to Brett Favre: 422 TDs passing the 420 of Dan Marino
Vikings Playing pretty good, but not good enough to win
NFC West
Cardinals Although it worked Sunday, will platooning Leinart and Warner be the right move all season?
49ers Not ready to be a playoff team. How bad did Trent Dilfer look?
Rams The worst team in the NFL with the most talent
Seahawks So this is where Marcus Pollard is at

~ Extra Point ~

If Philly fans once booed Santa Claus, are we to believe that Andy Reid is above Ol' Saint Nick? How is this man not getting booed out of the state of Pennsylvania?

As mentioned above, Brett Favre broke Dan Marino's career TD passing record with #421, finishing with 422. The next active QB in line is Peyton Manning at 283.

Michael Strahan broke Lawrence Taylor's sack record in the Sunday Night game against the Eagles. How ridiculous is it to mention Michael Strahan's name in the same sentence with Lawrence Taylor's? There is no comparison.

What is all this Futbol Americano business? If the NFL wants to appeal to Latin fans, that's fine, but why are there commercials on American TV, during the games, in Spanish? We guess the commercials are trying to appeal to Latin viewers to watch Futbol Americano.

When did 2nd and long become a running down?

The penalty for the Patriots coach Bill Belichick regarding the so-called Spygate was too lenient. Yes, the $500,000 fine to Belichick was huge, but that doesn't mean anything to me and you the football fans. Instead of a 1st round pick or a 2nd or 3rd round pick based upon the Pats making or not making (yeah right) the playoffs this season, why not either all their picks in 2008 or a #1 in 2008, 2009, and 2010? It seems that would punish the team more.

Ex-Giant George Martin began a cross country walk to raise money for ailing World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers. He began the walk at the George Washington Bridge and hopes to finish at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco in 4 months. His goal is to raise $10,000,000 with his walk. Good luck to him on his benevolent journey.

~ Fumble ~

RE: Lovie Smith

Lovie Smith was the Coach of the Year in 2005 and was in the Super Bowl in 2006. So if he is supposedly such a great coach, how in the world does he pull his starting QB, who he defended all last season and who took him to the Super Bowl, after 3 games? Not only that, he replaces him with a QB who isn't any better. If he was in doubt of Grossman's skills, why not get a better backup in the offseason? Are we to believe that he finally saw enough after a 1-2 start this season? Coach of the Year... come on!

~ 2 Minute Warning ~

Key Games:

Jets at Giants
     - Jets start their run for the playoffs or their season's done
     - Giants got to keep things rolling to keep pace with Dallas

Seahawks at Steelers
     - Can Seattle compete with a good AFC team?
     - Are the Steelers the best of the rest in the AFC or as inconsistent as most everyone else?

Chargers at Broncos
     - Beat Denver, and the Chargers are right back in it. Lose and they could be in freefall
     - Broncos must beat the AFC West champs to be the champs

Bears at Packers
     - Bears must get going or Super Bowl repeat is out
     - Are the Packers really 5-0 good?
