Our Week 16 picks

~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills Slim playoff hopes vanish in the cold snows of Cleveland
Dolphins 0-14... oh we mean 1-13, all right!
Jets Played the Pats tough but this team really just doesn't have any playmakers
Patriots Not so impressive in getting win #14
AFC South
Colts 12-2, but not really playing all that well
Jaguars Quietly at 10 wins
Texans Needed to play more consistent all season. In the end, it will cost them
Titans Should keep playoff hopes alive with victory at home against woeful Jets this Sunday
AFC North
Bengals Shouldn't have even made the trip to the west coast
Browns You're going to have to mention Phil Dawson in conversations about the best kickers in the league
Ravens This team could be the worst team in the NFL. Yes folks, the worst
Steelers Something's not right with this team
AFC West
Broncos What happened to the Broncos this season?
Chargers Finally, finally playing like the good football team that they're supposed to be
Chiefs Croyle might be the right fit in KC... we'll see
Raiders Played Indy tough, but in the end, same old Raiders
NFC East
Cowboys Must have been the presence of Jessica Simpson causing Romo's terrible performance. Injuries could be a factor
Eagles Finally played defense like they used to
Giants The rollercoaster ride continues
Redskins Who knew Todd Collins was so good?
NFC South
Buccaneers When Garcia plays, the Bucs are better than a good team
Falcons What do you expect from this beaten down team?
Panthers So is the Vinny T experiment over or should we stay excited in hopes that we see him play some more?
Saints Looks like Aaron Stecker is a legitimate threat
NFC North
Bears Orton, Greise, Grossman... does it really matter?
Lions 'Cause I'm free fallin'
Packers Another record for Favre as the road through Dallas may be detoured through Green Bay
Vikings The Viks are starting to smell the playoffs
NFC West
Cardinals Just not ready for primetime
49ers Now just hurting the Pats #1 pick
Rams At least Steven Jackson finally had a good game (24-143, 1 TD)
Seahawks So are we to conclude that this team is good or not so good or bad?

~ Extra Point ~

It was reported that Kyle Turley of the Chiefs will donate most of his $25,000 game check from his December 23 game against the Lions to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund. This fund provides medical aid and social services to retired NFL players. He also issued a challenge to all current players to do the same. Good stuff from Turley. We'll see how many of these millionaires will give a dime.

Before we blame Eli again, how many dropped passes did the Giants' recievers have? Jacobs had around 50 himself it seemed.

In the Bengals/49ers game, why did Marvin Lewis challenge that noncatch by Chad Johnson right before the 2 minute warning? Didn't he like the rest of America see the ball fly out of Chad's hands as he hit the ground?

And speaking of challenges, in the Jets/Pats game, Jet WR Justin McCareins caught an apparent TD. The Pats challenged it. As it was shown on replay McCareins clearly bobbled the ball and did not possess it with 2 feet in bounds. It was as clear as clear could be. Yet CBS expert #1 analyst Phil Simms said that it was too close to call.

While we're on the Jets, why are they running the option with Brad Smith? Who do they think they're fooling?

The Dolphins reaction to their victory was ridiculous. The owner was actually crying. Are you kidding me?

As for the NFL Network's announcing team, it's not Bryant Gumbal who is bad, it's Collinsworth.

And as far as Jessica Simpson is concerned, let's just say she's no Christina Aguilera.

It was reported this week that Bills TE Kevin Everett, who was injured with a serious spinal cord injury in Week 1, was walking on his own. Good news.

Of all the talking heads on all the different shows about the NFL, the person who seems to be the most logical is Mike Ditka.

We at The 5th Down Report were shocked and saddened by the useless murder of Redskins safety Sean Taylor. Let's not try to put a positive spin on it, about how God has a plan for what happened. It was senseless, purposeless, and barbaric. Let's hope that his family can continue their lives in as little emotional pain as possible. Furthermore, let's hope that these scumbags who did this are prosecuted to the fullest extent... hopefully death.

It's a shame that we have to accept poor officiating as the norm these days.

~ Fumble ~

RE: Bobby Petrino

Not sure anything else needs to be written. Here's a little man in a character sense who quits on his team 13 games into a 5 year contract to take another job. What a low down creep, a pathetic sad man.

~ Interception ~

RE: The Mitchell Report

As everyone waited for the findings of what MLB players were on steroids or HGH or whatever, it really is much ado about nothing. If the baseball owners were so concerned about this "problem", they could have locked the players out until they got an agreement from the players union that they will allow testing for HGH and the like. Whether it would have taken one month, one year, or several years, if they were so concerned and cared about the "integrity" of the game, they could have done that. Instead they not only chose to ignore it, they used it for all it was worth. Selling all the drama of McGuire, Sosa, Bonds, and anyone else hitting homeruns. The whole situation is an ongoing joke.
