~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills 5 FGs and a safety is enough to keep this team's playoff hopes alive
Dolphins 0-12 and counting...
Jets Crushed the Dolphins the way they should have
Patriots How cool are Brady and Belichick?
AFC South
Colts Basically sewed up the AFC South
Jaguars Just not one of the elite teams yet
Texans Having an improved season, but just don't have enough firepower
Titans Young finally has a game like we all knew he could and keeps the Titans playoff hopes very much alive
AFC North
Bengals Folks, this team is just plain bad
Browns What goes around comes around. The Browns got burned on a similar play that they burned the Jets on last year
Ravens Attention Baltimore fans: Boller can play and can actually be a good QB
Steelers Played fairly well in getting another win in the foul weather
AFC West
Broncos Turnovers and not much from the running game kill this suddenly poor team
Chargers L.T. finally wakes up and has a huge day in a big Charger win
Chiefs Playing out the season
Raiders Finally we get to see JaMarcus Russell
NFC East
Cowboys The NFC goes through Dallas... any questions?
Eagles Are the supposed rabid Philly fans still clamoring for Feeley?
Giants Let Eli play in the hurry-up and he looks like he knows how to play football
Redskins Time to melt down Joe Gibbs' bust in the Hall of Fame
NFC South
Buccaneers Luke McCown leads the Bucs to victory. How far can he take this team if he has to?
Falcons Joey Harrington... ah we had about enough of that
Panthers Who said Vinny T was too old?
Saints Yeah, Sean Payton for Coach of the Year
NFC North
Bears It's been a long time since we seen a QB cower when being persued by defenders. And it looked like Rex did it 2 or 3 times
Lions Going... going... going...
Packers Too bad the old careless gunslinger showed up in Dallas Thursday night
Vikings When this team plays good they seem like a great team
NFC West
Cardinals Kept their playoff hopes alive with an official-aided win
49ers Mailed it in
Rams We told you the Rams would win a number of their last 8 games
Seahawks Get it done in wet Philly. Could basically wrap up the division this Sunday

~ Extra Point ~

We at The 5th Down Report were shocked and saddened by the useless murder of Redskins safety Sean Taylor. Let's not try to put a positive spin on it, about how God has a plan for what happened. It was senseless, purposeless, and barbaric. Let's hope that his family can continue their lives in as little emotional pain as possible. Furthermore, let's hope that these scumbags who did this are prosecuted to the fullest extent... hopefully death.

Is it just us, or does it seem like Giant coach Tom Coughlin doesn't know what's going on?

Why do supposed "experts" still think the Eagles are a good team?

It's a shame that we have to accept poor officiating as the norm these days. In the Browns/Cards game, Winslow was clearly forced out of bounds... clearly.

Folks, the idea that Devin Hester is Superman is ridiculous. The fact that sportscasters are saying to kick the ball out of bounds instead of kicking off to him is crazy. Remember the term "coverage": punt "coverage" and kickoff "coverage". If it was all Hester, why wouldn't the Bears just snap the ball directly to him and let him fly into the endzone or whatever he does to get there.

Chris Collinsworth actually said that Brett Favre is not at the end of his career, but at the prime of his career... okay.

When it's third down and 18 yards or so to go, why do we keep hearing that there are no plays for that situation? How about a pass?

~ Fumble ~

RE: Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens played an excellent game against the Patriots Monday night coming up 3 points short. However, the idea that the officials cost you the game is not quite accurate. On the 4th down stop, your coach clearly called timeout. On the 4th down deflected pass, Samari Rolle definitely held the Patriot receiver. And on the touchdown, Gaffney did not juggle the ball. Case closed.

~ Interception ~

RE: BCS

How any true sports fan, or any true American for that matter, can like the college football postseason is beyond us. When will this nonsense end? We at The 5th Down Report are calling for all sportstalkers/writers whether it be radio, TV, or newspaper, to vigorously rip the college football BCS system.

To help the BCS dolts, we offer an example of a simple system. The top 15 teams in that ridiculous BCS Poll make the postseason. #1 gets a bye, #15 plays at #2, #14 plays at #3, #13 plays at #4, #12 plays at #5, #11 plays at #6, #10 plays at #7, #9 plays at #8. The winners and #1 then move on. Any, all, or none can be bowl games and any of the losers can still go to such elite bowls as the Chick-fil-A Bowl or the Papajohns.com Bowl.

Let the teams decide it on the field.
