Our Week 13 picks

~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills Had a few bright spots, but their season's done
Dolphins 0-11 and counting... but here come the Jets
Jets Got basted in Dallas. Don't know where to start with this team
Patriots Got a bit of a scare but survived to remain unbeaten
AFC South
Colts Beat the Jags in Indy this Sunday, and the AFC South is theirs
Jaguars Beat the Colts and the AFC South is up for grabs
Texans Definitely need more out of the running game
Titans Starting to slide out of the playoff picture... better right the ship before it's too late
AFC North
Bengals Good to see Chad Johnson is still in the league
Browns How 'bout them Browns
Ravens Is Billick done yet?
Steelers Eek out one in the slop
AFC West
Broncos Mike Shanahan should be fired
Chargers Should run the table and win the AFC West
Chiefs 4th and one at the Raiders' 23, down by 3, with 4:42 to go in the 4th quarter and Herm elects to go for it. Of course it gets stuffed and the Chiefs lose. "You play to win the game"
Raiders Finally catch a break and win one
NFC East
Cowboys Feasted on prime New Jersey turkey
Eagles Do we hear of a QB controversy brewing in Philly? You got to be kidding me
Giants The Giants are so far from a QB away from a Super Bowl
Redskins Committing 6 turnovers won't win you too many games
NFC South
Buccaneers The Bucs will win the NFC South with 10 wins
Falcons The end of the season can't come soon enough
Panthers What happened to David Carr?
Saints Have to put some wins together now. They could conceivably win 4 of their last 5
NFC North
Bears Bear fans should thank someone that they have Devin Hester. Folks, they don't have much else, and that includes the defense
Lions Huge game at Minnesota this Sunday
Packers Knock off the Cowboys in Dallas, and the Cowboys are coming to Green Bay in January
Vikings Wow! Is this team really this good, or are the Giants really that bad?
NFC West
Cardinals Just when we were talking playoffs, the same old Cards show up. We don't want to hear about Warner's numbers... he stinks
49ers Should have played with such effort all year
Rams Oh so close, should get win #3 in Atlanta this Sunday
Seahawks Pull out a crappy win over the Rams, but a win is a win, especially in the rotten NFC West

~ Extra Point ~

Attention Giant fans. We know this will be debated over and over 1,000 times over the next few years, but the Eli Manning era is over. The Giants will never win a Super Bowl with Eli at QB. There are no more questions about it. Folks, he is not, not only an elite QB, but he is not even a good QB. So there will be no more debate about Eli here at The 5th Down Report. He's done.

And folks, it's not Eli who is adopted, it's Peyton.

And while we're at it, the idea that Rex Grossman is any good is also completely ridiculous.

Do John Madden and Al Michaels need glasses? On Jabar Gaffney's TD reception with 12 seconds left in the half, they went on and on about how the played should be review. On the first replay, it was clear that Gaffney had possession and had both feet in. Yet Madden and Michaels went on about how they can't believe it wasn't going to be reviewed. Madden even did his shtick about one knee equals two feet nonsense. Then somebody must have told them in their ears that the play was clearly good because they suddenly shut up and never went back to it.

And while we're on the subject of Madden, how can a former coach, in fact a Super Bowl champion coach, think that the Eagles had no shot at winning against the Patriots? Look fans are one thing, they jump on and swallow all the hype, but here is a former coach who actually had a team (1976 Raiders) go 16-1, telling the fans that he can't believe that the Eagles are doomed against the Pats. Are you telling us in 1976 you felt like no one could beat your team. You won 7 games by 10 or less points including 2 by 1 point. Come one John, give us the former coach's perspective, not the starry eyed fan's.

Chris Collinsworth actually said that Brett Favre is not at the end of his career, but at the prime of his career... okay.

When it's third down and 18 yards or so to go, why do we keep hearing that there are no plays for that situation? How about a pass?

RE: NFL Network Havenots

Folks, what's the controversy about the NFL Network showing a few games this season? If it's so important for you as a football fan to see the games on this network, simply get the TV systems that have the network. If it's Dish, Direct, cable, or some other means. I mean what's the problem?

Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on winning the 2007 Grey Cup, the Canadian Football League's championship. The Roughriders defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19 on Sunday.
