~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills Thought this team would play better against Miami, but do manage to get to 5-4, only to be 5-5 after losing to the Pats this Sunday
Dolphins Oh so close, but 0-9 fits just right
Jets As promising as last year's team was, next year's team will probably have to be totally rebuilt
Patriots The quest for perfection resumes in Buffalo
AFC South
Colts Even the great Peyton can't overcome 6 INTs and 2 missed FGs and the usual atrocious call by an official
Jaguars The Jags got their running game going and their tough D stymied the shaky Titans
Texans Can Ron Dayne carry this team?
Titans If you can't score touchdowns, you aren't going to win too many games
AFC North
Bengals It took 7 FGs, but Cincy finally gets another win
Browns This team is a good RB away from being a very good team
Ravens This team is totally coming apart and being exposed as the bad team that it is
Steelers Looks like Big Ben's injury suffered against the Ravens wasn't so bad after all
AFC West
Broncos Looks like Denver may have another great RB (Seldon Young: 20-109-1 TD)
Chargers At least they can return kickoffs and punts for TDs. Other than that, this team is not good (and we don't know why)
Chiefs Brodie Croyle plays and that's not a bad thing for the flat Chiefs
Raiders Cut the nonsense and play Russell at QB already
NFC East
Cowboys Cream of the NFC crop
Eagles Showed some life in DC, but will have to play so much better if they are thinking playoffs
Giants As we thought, the Giants aren't quite ready for primetime just yet
Redskins Does Joe Gibbs have any idea what he's doing?
NFC South
Buccaneers Will the Bucs sink or swim coming off the bye?
Falcons Just when you thought the Falcons were done, they win 2 in a row
Panthers We guess Vinny T is a nice story, but you're not going to win with him as your every game QB
Saints Sure thought that the Saints were ready to ascend to the top of the NFC South, but lay an egg against the previously winless Rams
NFC North
Bears Rex Grossman returns. That could only mean good things... yeah right
Lions If the Lions beat the Giants this Sunday, we will take them for real... maybe
Packers So can we consider this team good, yet?
Vikings One week after setting a record, Adrian Peterson gets hurt and will miss this week's game against the Raiders. How fickle the NFL is
NFC West
Cardinals When the Card D plays good, this team can win some games. But you ain't going nowhere with Warner
49ers Just seems like the 49ers' tank is empty
Rams How 'bout them Rams
Seahawks Seattle can always beat up the bad team. This year, that will take them to the playoffs

~ Extra Point ~

We know Troy Aikman and Darryl "Moose" Johnston have won 3 Super Bowls together, but when they are the analysts on a game the stuff that comes out of their mouths sounds like they never played the game before.

Why do we keep hearing of how great a blocker Jeremy Shockey is? You know why, because the one decent block he makes they replay it with the announcers fawning all over it, while the 10-15 blocks he misses or is thrown to the side or takes the play off are glossed over.

The Giants really need to stop with the red jerseys already.

In the Chargers/Colts game Sunday night, Colts LB Clint Session intercepted a ball in the end zone that was deflected and rolled on the backs and legs of a few players. The official standing right there (by the goalpost) threw his beanbag indicating a turnover. However, an official we think from the side of the end zone, blew his whistle calling the play dead. The Colts were awarded the ball at the 20 because it was ruled a touchback. Did we mention that Session returned the ball to the Charger 5? We think the official blowing the whistle was actually calling it incomplete, but they got lucky because it was in the end zone and a touchback was easily awarded. Moral of the story is the officiating is still very poor in the close play, big spot area.

Seattle's Shaun Alexander sure seems like a soft player.

Hate to say this because he was a great tough, tough player, but Steve McNair is done.

Andy Reid should retire and deal with life. We mean - your sons being drug addicts and in jail should be more important than whether the Giants are going to play a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense against you.

Has anybody's worth fell more this season than Mangenius'?

The fact that Vinny Testeverde is playing QB today is a blemish on the NFL.

~ Fumble ~

RE: Football Night in America Redux

This program is so bad, we have to run it twice:

Sunday night's Football Night in America on NBC is bad, really bad. We weren't fans of Chris "I'm not shtick" Berman on ESPN, but we long for his and Tom Jackson's show. Does Bob Costas, Keith Olbermann, and Chris Collinsworth think they're comediens? Do they really think they're funny? Guys, you are over 50, or close to it, stop giggling after every pointless thing you say like little school girls. None of you are funny. Why not just show highlights of the many games that were played during the day and give informative updates of the games still in progress? It's hard to believe that Tiki left football to offer so little on this ridiculous production. Furthermore, Collinsworth and Olbermann have faces meant for radio.

And while we're at it, that stunt NBC pulled with turning the lights off inside the studio, was probably the dumbest thing on TV since that gay guy won the first Survivor.

RE: NBA/NHL seasons open

So we heard that the NBA, as well as the NHL seasons have started. Someone wake us up from the coma we're in.
