~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills #11 pick in 2008 draft
Dolphins #1 pick in 2008 draft
Jets #6 pick in 2008 draft
Patriots With a lot of people getting caught up with the Giants this past week, perhaps we forgot how good the Patriots are. Don't see or hear of any reason the Pats will not go out in business-like fashion and win this game, capping off a 19-0 season. No need to spell out what they need to do, they know how to do it
AFC South
Colts No first round pick. Their #29 pick goes to the 49ers
Jaguars #26 pick in 2008 draft
Texans #18 pick in 2008 draft
Titans #24 pick in 2008 draft
AFC North
Bengals #9 pick in 2008 draft
Browns No first round pick, their #22 pick goes to the Cowboys
Ravens #8 pick in 2008 draft
Steelers #23 pick in 2008 draft
AFC West
Broncos #12 pick in 2008 draft
Chargers #27 pick in 2008 draft
Chiefs Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Raiders Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
NFC East
Cowboys #22 pick (from the Browns) and #28 pick in 2008 draft
Eagles #19 pick in 2008 draft
Giants Must score TDs, not FGs. Cannot play too conservatively even if the game is going that way. Cannot have turnovers and must use Jacobs and Bradshaw solidly. No need to make the huge play if it's not there. Can't have Plax catch 12 balls, but drop 2 in the end zone. And, Jacobs better not stick the ball out when he's nearing the goaline. DBs: don't be heroes. Watch the underneath more instead of the deep ball to Moss
Redskins #21 pick in 2008 draft
NFC South
Buccaneers #20 pick in 2008 draft
Falcons Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Panthers #13 pick in 2008 draft
Saints #10 pick in 2008 draft
NFC North
Bears #14 pick in 2008 draft
Lions #15 pick in 2008 draft
Packers #30 pick in 2008 draft
Vikings #17 pick in 2008 draft
NFC West
Cardinals #16 pick in 2008 draft
49ers #29 pick (from Indy) in 2008 draft
Rams #2 pick in 2008 draft
Seahawks #25 pick in 2008 draft

~ Extra Point ~

The Super Bowl should really be played in the home stadium of the team who had the better record.

Somebody better tell these DBs that they're all not Neon Deion. Make the INT, hit the deck (before you get hit), especially in the playoffs, especially in the Super Bowl.

Let's put to rest the notion that the punter is a weapon. If you have to rely on your punter as an offensive strong point, you're pretty much in trouble.

Of all the Patriots weapons, none is more unheralded than Kevin Faulk.

Perfection is not 16-0, it's 19-0.

RE: 2 Week Super Bowl Lag and the Media

It has become abundantly clear that there's absolutely no need for the Super Bowl to be played 2 weeks after the championship games. If it wasn't clear before, this year has seemed to crystalize it. Folks, it's a football game, no more, no less. It isn't a hostage situation played out on the world stage where things are changing hour by hour, minute by minute. We mean: we had a good practice, the ankle's still a little sore, etc. What else do you get?

And here's the funny thing, if someone says something even remotely controversial (not sure how picking your own team to win is controversial like Plax did), all you hear is people saying that he shouldn't have said that. That it'll fire up the Patriots. Come on. Play this game the following Sunday. If that's not enough time, then play it on Monday or move the championship games to Saturday... something, anything to prevent this 2 week lag.

RE: The Trentonian (NJ) Newspaper

There was an advertisement for an issue of the Trentonian newspaper with a special Super Bowl section. The section was good as I opened the first page and saw Super Bowl 1 with a brief recap and the complete box score with all the individual stats. This continued up until Super Bowl 8, where there was only a brief recap of the game, no box score. What started as a great source of information turned into meaningless fluff. This pattern continued throughout the rest of the paper. Complete box scores for most games with the exception of Super Bowls 8, 9, 18, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 32, 33, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, and 41. What could have been a great publication instead turned out to be a junior high school-like project. (Also, some of the box scores that were given were cut off and incomplete.)
