~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills #11 pick in 2008 draft
Dolphins #1 pick in 2008 draft
Jets #6 pick in 2008 draft
Patriots Even with Brady not playing all that well, even appearing somewhat under the weather, this complete team can compensate with a strong running game. There's no folklore, just a great team. Can't see them not being 19-0
AFC South
Colts No first round pick. Their #29 pick goes to the 49ers
Jaguars #26 pick in 2008 draft
Texans #18 pick in 2008 draft
Titans #24 pick in 2008 draft
AFC North
Bengals #9 pick in 2008 draft
Browns No first round pick, their #22 pick goes to the Cowboys
Ravens #8 pick in 2008 draft
Steelers #23 pick in 2008 draft
AFC West
Broncos #12 pick in 2008 draft
Chargers Would have loved to seen this team play the Pats with a healthy L.T., Gates, and Rivers
Chiefs Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Raiders Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
NFC East
Cowboys #22 pick (from the Browns) and #28 pick in 2008 draft
Eagles #19 pick in 2008 draft
Giants Aren't going to beat the Pats with stupid opponents' drive-continuing penalties. Going to have to tackle better and special teams can't cough up the ball. The special teams coach should have told McQuarters to fair catch that punt. There was no need for him to make a huge play, the Packers couldn't stop the Giants' offense
Redskins #21 pick in 2008 draft
NFC South
Buccaneers #20 pick in 2008 draft
Falcons Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Panthers #13 pick in 2008 draft
Saints #10 pick in 2008 draft
NFC North
Bears #14 pick in 2008 draft
Lions #15 pick in 2008 draft
Packers Smoke and mirror season comes to a hard cold end. The underachieving gunslinger fades out into the icy Wisconsin sunset
Vikings #17 pick in 2008 draft
NFC West
Cardinals #16 pick in 2008 draft
49ers #29 pick (from Indy) in 2008 draft
Rams #2 pick in 2008 draft
Seahawks #25 pick in 2008 draft

~ Extra Point ~

At some point in the Chargers/Patriots game, the Chargers had to make a play to win the game. You aren't going to win many playoff games playing for FGs, and at some point, you have to go for it and pass up the 3 points. Also, what is Norv thinking, with 9:36 to go in the 4th quarter at the Pats 36 down by 9 punting the ball? Norv, in the words of Herman Edwards, "you play to win the game."

The Giants so soundly beat the Packers that the score could have easily been 30-3 G-Men.

Forget the Packers, we're still waiting for someone to show us on paper where the Cowboys are better than the Giants.

On at least 2 occations, Joe Buck calling the Packers/Giants game along with Troy Aikman, asked aloud how Eli was able to function in certain situations. Hey dude, why don't you ask the guy standing next to you? He's a 3-time Super Bowl winning quarterback. He might know something about it.

Good to hear Deion Sanders of The NFL Network call out LaDainian Tomlinson on his MIA performance Sunday against the Pats. There's no doubt about it, Deion is one of the few talking heads who truly tells it like it is.

Somebody better tell these DBs that they're all not Neon Deion. Make the INT, hit the deck (before you get hit), especially in the playoffs, especially in the Super Bowl.

Let's put to rest the notion that the punter is a weapon. If you have to rely on your punter as an offensive strong point, you're pretty much in trouble.

Of all the Patriots weapons, none is more unheralded than Kevin Faulk.

Is it just us or does Philip Rivers seem like the kind of pouty spoiled kid whose daddy owns the team, and if you don't play the way he wants you to, he will take his ball and go home?

Good to see that Bill Belichick was named NFL Coach of the Year. Finally a coach who knows how to coach consistently.

Perfection is not 16-0, it's 19-0.

RE: Packers/Favre mistique

Let's see, the Packers were going to beat the Giants because it was going to be below 0°, the stadium they were playing in saw 5 championships, 40-47 years ago, and there quarterback was named Favre. Let's take these one at a time. First off, I looked at the Packers roster. No one grew up in Siberia or in a meat locker. Indeed it was cold for the Giants, but obviously, it would be cold for the Packers as well. In fact, the person who looked the coldest, who looked like a plastic figure in the old Bobby Orr table-top hockey game, was the 38-year-old interception prone quarterback, Brett Favre. Secondly, the Lombardi Packers ended after the 1967 season. Let's say that one more time, 1967. So let's see, the Giants are going to lose because 40 years ago the Packers won some championships. And finally, folks, we don't want to rip Brett Favre. He's going to the Hall of Fame, he's played in 275 straight games, and 11 years ago he won a Super Bowl. Good career. But folks, as loyal football fans watching Favre over the past 2, 3, 4, 5 years you could see how reckless a player he was. You cannot just throw the ball up in the NFL and expect to win championships. No one in their right minds thought that after the Packers won the coin toss in overtime that Favre would lead the Packers down the field to the Super Bowl. Yet, we actually heard people saying that very thing Monday in the media. Folks, take the cheese out of your eyes and believe what you see, not what some guy named "Mad Dog" or "Boomer", in their most authoritative voices tells you to believe.
