~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills Will first round pick RB Marshawn Lynch be able to fill the shoes of departed Willis McGahee?
Dolphins Trent Green? to the rescue?
Jets Offensive Line woes and first round pick CB Darrelle Revis missing most of camp shrouds what seemed like a promising year for Gang Green
Patriots This team is loaded both offensively and defensively
AFC South
Colts Super Bowl champs ready to repeat. However, they lost a lot on defense
Jaguars Leftwich or Garrard? It might not matter
Texans Maybe Mario Williams #1 last year wasn't such a bad choice. The Texans are building a strong D. Question is can Matt Schaub be the QB everyone thinks he can be?
Titans Vince Young should have a very good year, but the Titans lack substantial offensive weapons. (We know about Eric Moulds)
AFC North
Bengals Bengal fans should be happy that with all the off the field problems notwithstanding, Chad Johnson is planning a lot of endzone dancing
Browns We don't want to hear about a QB controversey. Quinn was selected in the first round to start. Let him have his shot. It's the Browns only hope
Ravens Can Willis McGahee lead this already good team to the Super Bowl?
Steelers Which Ben will show up, last year's or 2005's?
AFC West
Broncos Loaded up offensively with TE Daniel Graham and RB Travis Henry. Will the D suffer, however, with the release of Al Harris?
Chargers Will swapping Marty for Norv Turner get the Chargers to the Super Bowl? Probably as much as swapping blue helmets for white ones
Chiefs The best news for Chief fans, Larry Johnson reports to camp
Raiders Bolstered its D with ex-Jag S Donovin Darius, but O woes could hamper them. They are yet to sign #1 pick QB JaMarcus Russell and new RB Dominic Rhodes is suspended for the first four games
NFC East
Cowboys Should be the beasts in the east in the NFC
Eagles Looks like an 8-8 year, if McNabb can stay on the field
Giants So Shockey wants to be a leader? It's unfortunate, but Shockey, Burress, and Strahan only hurt this team
Redskins If this team only had a decent QB
NFC South
Buccaneers Talk about a QB controversey - Garcia, Simms, Gradkowski, and McCown. For the record, we like Simms
Falcons With Vick gone and Warrick Dunn hurt - that's 2,179 yards rushing - GONE
Panthers Have we seen the last of Jake Delhomme and John Fox?
Saints Things could only get better for the Saints, if they avoid injuries
NFC North
Bears If Cedric Benson produces, the Bears should go deep into the playoffs, depsite Rex Grossman
Lions It looks like another long year for Jon Kitna
Packers Folks, the best Favre can do is lead this team to 8 wins
Vikings Will Tarvaris Jackson be able to lead this team to the playoffs?
NFC West
Cardinals Might score 30 points a game, but might give up 35
49ers Best moves of the off-season: signing Frank Gore for 4 more years, acquiring a WR Ashley Lelie, and signing CB Nate Clements
Rams Time for Marc Bulger to lead this team to the playoffs
Seahawks Loaded up defensively for one final run for Hasselbeck and the Seahawks

~ Extra Point ~

We at The 5th Down Report, as with the rest of the football loving world, we're saddened by the passing of Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh. His innovated and ingenious coaching style lead the once lowly 49ers to 3 Super Bowl championships. Had he not left coaching after his 3rd Super Bowl victory, he probably would have won at least 2 more. He was nicknamed "The Genius" for good reason. The football world will miss him.

The team owners have voted to make replay a perminant officiating tool. That's fine. However, remember it's the man, the referee, who must interperet correctly what he is seeing. That seemed to be a problem in the past.

Back in May, the MGM MIRAGE Sports Book posted odds on teams winning the Super Bowl. A few appealing ones were the Seahawks at 13-1, the Broncos at 15-1, and for those of you looking for a long shot, the 49ers at 25-1.

In case anyone hasn't heard yet, NFL Europa has gone the way of the XFL, the USFL, and the A(merican)FL.

~ Fumble ~

RE: Michael Vick and his defenders

There are two separate issues here. Number 1 is Mike Vick's sadistic, stupid, and financially devistating participation in the crime of dog fighting. A man who earns $137 million is not some hustling street thug, wannabe rapper, or some dude who goes to the local tavern for a few beers after a hard day's work loading trucks at FedEx. Vick had an obligation to his family to keep them in fine wine and freshly pressed linens for the rest of their lives. Why would a multi-millionaire engage in such a, to put it benignly, foolish activity? He deserves whatever the justice system and the NFL hands him.

Number 2 is to the people who are defending Mike Vick. Look, he's your friend, you want to support him, fine. But we don't want to hear your rational of dog fighting as a sport or comparing it to horse racing or hunting.

RE: Rutgers Football

Folks, we love Rutgers. In fact, 50% of the staff at The 5th Down Report are graduates of Rutgers. But all that notwithstanding, how can you seriously consider a team that beats Buffalo, Navy, Norfolk State, Cincinnati, South Florida, Connecticut, and Army, a realistic #1 team? Since when is Louisville a big time powerhouse in college football?

Coming next week: what college team will be #1, eh voted #1, in the nation this season?

A: Yes, Kiwanuka's a player and should be fine at LB.
