~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills #11 pick in 2008 draft
Dolphins So long Cam Cameron as the era of the Tuna takes hold
Jets #6 pick in 2008 draft
Patriots Calm and cool as they await their 17th victory
AFC South
Colts 2 questions: will Marvin Harrison be ready to play and if not will the Colts be able to overcome that?
Jaguars Played liked we knew they could, however it won't be the same in New England
Texans #18 pick in 2008 draft
Titans You can't play for FGs in the playoffs, especially against a team that is better than you and you have them on the ropes. This is a good team with a good D, but they need some big time receivers and a great RB (don't think LenDale White is the answer)
AFC North
Bengals #9 pick in 2008 draft
Browns No first round pick, their #22 pick goes to the Cowboys
Ravens #8 pick in 2008 draft
Steelers Couldn't compensate for a missing Willie Parker. Going for 2 at the wrong time cost them... maybe the game
AFC West
Broncos #12 pick in 2008 draft
Chargers Played not-so-well for most of the game against the Titans. If they play that way against the Colts, they'll have no shot. Tennessee's FGs will be Indy TDs
Chiefs Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Raiders Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
NFC East
Cowboys Better hope T.O.'s ready to go against the surging Giants
Eagles #19 pick in 2008 draft
Giants Eli's finally playing, at least, like he knows how to play the QB position. Don't be suprised if the G-Men are in Lambeau in 2 weeks
Redskins You're not going to win many playoff games with Todd Collins at QB. It was a nice story for a couple of weeks, but Redskin fans better hope that he's not your QB next season
NFC South
Buccaneers Can't imagine this Buc defense was #1 at anything. They're old and running on past glory. Garcia and the offense aren't no spring chickens either
Falcons Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Panthers #13 pick in 2008 draft
Saints #10 pick in 2008 draft
NFC North
Bears #14 pick in 2008 draft
Lions Why would a team with such a potent offense and such a poor defense fire the offensive coordinator? (This team has no idea how to produce a winner)
Packers Better hope Favre doesn't try to beat Seattle all by himself
Vikings #17 pick in 2008 draft
NFC West
Cardinals #16 pick in 2008 draft
49ers Their #7 pick goes to the Patriots. Their 1st round pick is from Indy and will be based on where Indy finishes the season. (Between #24-#31)
Rams #2 pick in 2008 draft
Seahawks Luckily played the not-so-powerful Redskins or would have been bounced from the playoffs. Alexander really needs to step it up... if he can

~ Extra Point ~

Why exactly were people calling the Redskins a team of destiny? It couldn't have been because they had a 12 year rookie QB and that one of their players was senselessly murdered, could it?

Tom Hammond doing the Redskins/Seahawks game thought Anthony Mix had a TD for the Redskins when he scooped up the Redskin kickoff and ran it 14 yards into the endzone. Of course the kickoff team can't advance a recovered kickoff as we all know.

In the Jaguars/Steelers game with just over 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, the Jags were faced with a 3rd and 13. John Madden said that the Jags don't have many plays for 3rd and 13... huh? Garrard dropped back and completed a 17 yard pass to Dennis Northcutt for a first down.

It won't hurt for the Giants to send Jessica Simpson some tickets to Sunday's game in Dallas.

Do you beleive that there were idiots who were actually saying that Kerry Collins should start for the Titans against the Chargers rather than Vince Young. Folks, were not making that up.

Is it just us or does Philip Rivers seem like the kind of pouty spoiled kid whose daddy owns the team, and if you don't play the way he wants you to, he will take his ball and go home?

Good to see that Bill Belichick was named NFL Coach of the Year. Finally a coach who knows how to coach consistently.

Could someone tell us why NBC sideline reporter Andrea Kramer has a job? Who is throwing her a bone and why? Take her salary and donate it to hurricane Katrina victims or some other worthwhile cause.

We don't usually give out real estate data here but we've been informed that Mike Vick's home in Surry, Virginia, the home of his insane dog fighting business, is for sale for a relatively modest $1.1 million. Folks, it comes with 15 acres of land.

Perfection is not 16-0, it's 19-0.

~ Fumble ~

RE: Pittsburgh Steeler Coach Mike Tomlin

Folks, it's really not that complicated. You don't go for 2 points until you absolutely have to. There's no strategy, there's no charts, there's no formula. With 10:25 to go in the 4th quarter, and you're down 28-23, you kick the extra point to make it 28-24 because with so much time left there probably will be more scoring. Now at 28-24, when you scored another touchdown you kick the extra point and go up 31-28. Then should the Jags kick a field goal, they only tie the game at 31. For Mike Tomlin to say that going for 2 at 28-23 was insignificant was not only dumb, it was flat out wrong. The Steelers lost the game because of that decision to go for 2. Now, they still could have lost in overtime, but we'll never know.

RE: Steroids in baseball

Why is there this sudden interest in steroid use in baseball? What exactly is the point? So Barry Bonds was on steroids, or Roger Clemens was on steroids, what exactly is baseball hoping to accomplish, or more to the point, what is baseball going to do with the numbers these players put up? We're just asking.
