~ Kickoff ~

Welcome.

You have arrived at the most authentic site about professional football. This site is all encompassing in its no nonsense, to-the-point, "real" analysis of the teams, players, coaches, officials, broadcasters, and of the league itself.

This site is not a fantasy site, nor a stat site, nor a betting site, nor is it a site that recaps what we as fans have seen and heard over and over, ad nauseam, watching the highlights and listening to the radio all week.

Our views on this site will be astute, concise, and maybe you'll find them insightful.

You will notice that this site is quite simple in its design. This is so, not because of a lack of imagination or web design talent, but rather because of a disdain for the clutter found on a lot of other sites. This site focuses on content rather than graphics. There are a few flashing lights and animations for those who feel they are a requirement on a web site.

So after you've read it and reread it, let us know your opinion about anything we've said here or anything else you'd like to express regarding the great game of football. Contact us at: blitz@5thdownreport.net. Thank you and enjoy.

This site will be updated weekly, primarily on Wednesdays.

~ Touchdown ~

Around the League

AFC East
Bills #11 pick in 2008 draft
Dolphins #1 pick in 2008 draft
Jets #6 pick in 2008 draft
Patriots Can't play much better than the way Tom Brady played against the Jags. 17-0 on their way to 19-0
AFC South
Colts Seem to abandon the running game. Although Peyton threw for 402 yards - 2 INTs and 1 big Harrison fumble result in only 24 points, not enough
Jaguars Need some big time WRs
Texans #18 pick in 2008 draft
Titans This is a good team with a good D, but they need some big time receivers and a great RB (don't think LenDale White is the answer)
AFC North
Bengals #9 pick in 2008 draft
Browns No first round pick, their #22 pick goes to the Cowboys
Ravens #8 pick in 2008 draft
Steelers Need to sure up the O-Line
AFC West
Broncos #12 pick in 2008 draft
Chargers Backups came in and came through. Better hope at least Rivers can play Sunday or else they have absolutely no chance. As it is now, they have no chance
Chiefs Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Raiders Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
NFC East
Cowboys Came up short when they had to both offensively and defensively. Seem to go away from Barber in the running game in the second half. And why not try to throw to Owens more? The Cowboys and their fans seem totally stunned that anyone could come into Dallas and beat them... well guess what?
Eagles #19 pick in 2008 draft
Giants So long as Eli and the team don't turn the ball over, the Giants are good enough to go to the Super Bowl. With Jacobs not fumbling, Steve Smith picking up the slack for an injured Plax, Toomer playing like he always does, and the absense of that obnoxious, overrated, windbag of a tight end, the G-Men look pretty good
Redskins Good bye Mr. Gibbs (so long 3rd down and 1... right up the gut, and 4th down and 1... again right up the gut)
NFC South
Buccaneers This team will need wholesale changes
Falcons Either #3, #4, or #5 pick in 2008 draft (subject to coin flip between Chiefs, Raiders, and Falcons)
Panthers #13 pick in 2008 draft
Saints #10 pick in 2008 draft
NFC North
Bears #14 pick in 2008 draft
Lions #15 pick in 2008 draft
Packers One final hurrah for Favre in Lambeau
Vikings #17 pick in 2008 draft
NFC West
Cardinals #16 pick in 2008 draft
49ers Their #7 pick goes to the Patriots. Their 1st round pick is from Indy and will be based on where Indy finishes the season. (Between #24-#31)
Rams #2 pick in 2008 draft
Seahawks Once the snow started, the Seahawks wanted no part of this game. The Hasselbeck, Alexander, and possibly Holmgren eras may be over

~ Extra Point ~

On the Jags first TD, a 8 yard pass to Matt Jones, QB David Garrard was rolling out and as he was being pulled down he released the ball. Bill Belichick thought about challenging whether Garrard's knee hit the ground before he released the ball. Jim Nantz calling the game asked his broadcast partner Phil Simms what he thinks (knee down or not). Simms responded, "I think it's close." Ah, no kidding Phil.

Of all the Patriots weapons, none is more unheralded than Kevin Faulk.

How happy do you think Chris Chambers is to be out of Miami and in San Diego?

Patrick Crayton of the Cowboys did a lot of talking leading up to the game with the Giants. Too bad he backed it up with a muffed punt and several dropped passes.

How ridiculous and how throughly illogical was that T.O. crying escapade during his press conference?

How great is it that some people feel that the Cowboys lost because Romo went to Mexico with Jessica Simpson?

Is it just us or does Philip Rivers seem like the kind of pouty spoiled kid whose daddy owns the team, and if you don't play the way he wants you to, he will take his ball and go home?

Good to see that Bill Belichick was named NFL Coach of the Year. Finally a coach who knows how to coach consistently.

Perfection is not 16-0, it's 19-0.

~ Fumble ~

RE: Indianapolis Colts

We realize that the Colts won the Super Bowl last season, but over Peyton Manning's career, the Colts have really underachieved. Now understandably, that will never be said because of that one Super Bowl victory but there should have been more from this dominant team. If you can criticize Romo for going to Mexico, then how about Peyton for doing those 100 or so (it seems) arrogant commercials, where he puts regular folks down.
